You may have heard about the 4-year-old child that fell into the gorilla habitat at the Cincinnati Zoo over the weekend. The gorilla, Harambe, was shot and killed by zoo officials in order to protect and free the child. Read more here.
The whole situation is so very upsetting and dreadfully unfortunate.
As soon as word got out about what happened, the floodgates opened of people with their opinions. I’ve seen a lot of posts and memes on Facebook and social media calling out the mother for not watching her child close enough, blaming her for the death of the gorilla.
“Where was the mother when her child fell into the gorilla cage?”
“I hope the parents get charged for the death of Harambe since they weren’t watching their child”
“Child services should take the boy away from those negligent parents”
And so on.
There is also an online petition calling for the parents to be held responsible for the death of Harambe.
Ok. I get it. People are upset about what happened. I am too. The true victim here is the innocent gorilla.
But here’s a question – have YOU ever taken your eyes off of your child for just a second? Have you ever looked away or got distracted for a moment and something happened to your child? Maybe they fell down the stairs or grabbed something sharp that shouldn’t have been within reach? Have you ever thought to yourself “that was a close one” ???
OF COURSE you have!
There is no such thing as the “perfect parent”. Some of us are just luckier than others when it comes to accidents involving our kids. Remember that the next time your child runs away at the mall or at the park or the grocery store. Because you know it’s happened to you.
So let’s lay off the mum here, shall we? None of us know exactly what happened that day.
Just my opinion.
And RIP to Harambe the gorilla. Just an awful and upsetting situation.
