We officially have a WINNER and viewers were NOT pleased!
To kick off the yearly anticipated Shark Week on Discovery, the most anticipated race took place! Phelps vs. Shark: Great Gold vs. Great White was billed as pitting 23 Olympic gold medals against millions of years of natural evolution.
Viewers watched Phelps swim 100m with the help of a “monofin” – a shark-like fin attached to his feet.
The “shark” edged Phelps out by just two seconds, but viewers were left unhappy as it was only a hologram Phelps was racing.
PLENTY of people took to social media to call out the special:
“Should’ve called it Michael Phelps vs a Computer Generated Simulation. Huge let down @Discovery,”
“I know it’s stupid to think Michael Phelps was actually going to be racing against a real shark but I’m stupid and upset.”
“So you’re telling me I waited all this time to watch Michael Phelps race a great white shark but it turned out to be a damn stimulation,”
All this comes off of the show being heavily publicized and footage even showed Phelps in a shark tank “practising” for the challenge.
But 57 minutes into the show, one of the scientists said: “Clearly, we can’t put Michael in one lane and a white shark on the far lane. We’re gonna have to do a simulation.
However, we still feel disappointed. At least we have a week left of shark programs to look forward to.
